Kicking Off 2025 with SYCANN: Fun, Games, and Networking!

Today, we had our first South Yorkshire Children’s Additional Needs Network (SYCANN) meeting of the year, and what a fantastic start it was! The meeting was packed with engaging activities, lively discussions, and plenty of opportunities to connect. Welcome & Introductions Nina Rose, our new chair, warmly welcomed everyone and gave a brief background of SYCANN for our new members. Her enthusiasm set the perfect tone for the rest of the session. Previous Minutes & Matters Arising We quickly agreed on the previous minutes, with no matters arising. Members were encouraged to complete the feedback questionnaire to help us make future meetings even better. Reasonable Adjustment Bingo The highlight of the meeting was undoubtedly the Reasonable Adjustment Bingo! Themed around reasonable adjustments for children with additional needs, the game was a hit. Fabulous prizes were up for grabs, including a bottle of red wine. We had two winners shouting bingo at the same time. They couldn’t share the bottle however—that would be unprofessional at midday in a law firm—so one winner graciously conceded it. 😜 Cheers to community spirit! Open Discussion We then moved on to an open discussion about the future direction of SYCANN. There was a lively conversation […]

Farewell and Thank You, Jan!

We bid a heartfelt farewell to Jan Tippett, who has been an outstanding volunteer and chair for SYCANN. Jan, you will be deeply missed, and your dedication and hard work have left an indelible mark on our community. Thank you for everything! Nina Rose, our new chair, has some pretty big shoes to fill, but we are confident in her leadership. Joining her as vice chair is Maxine Beckett, Support and Rehabilitation Coordinator for South Yorkshire Area and a nurse by trade. Welcome, Nina and Maxine!

£265k LOTTERY FUNDING SECURED TO SUPPORT CARERS IN SHEFFIELD
Local charity Sheffield Mencap & Gateway has been awarded £264,974 by the National Lottery Community Fund to deliver a new service providing vital support to carers of people with learning disabilities or autism in communities across Sheffield. The charity, which has provided support to carers since 1951, secured the funding in response to critical needs identified in Sheffield City Council’s 2022 report into the disproportionate impacts of Covid-19 on carers. The new Carers Support Service will bring together carers in communities across Sheffield, forming social support groups. With over a quarter of carers (29%) reporting feeling lonely ‘often or always’ (Carers UK, State of Caring 2022) these groups will be a key part of reducing isolation and improving wellbeing. The service is rooted in the NHS endorsed ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ concept, with groups providing opportunities to connect through shared experiences, give back to others through peer support, and learn new skills. Carers of people with a learning disability or autism and their loved ones in Sheffield will be able to access the service from July 2023, with a predicted 450 people being supported over the 3-year funding period. Kelly Daubney, Senior Manager of Carers Projects at Sheffield Mencap and […]
